English and its increased influence in Sweden

Professor Jan Svartvik writes in his book (Please see references) that “The average Swede depends on English in all circumstances. Unfortunately, this attitude is unrealistic. English does not function in large parts of the world. What follows from this obsession with English as a language of communication is that the Western cultural sphere with its Anglo American tilt comes to dominate in the recipient countries as well.

Leading politicians, in France especially, warn against a development towards a monolingual world where English takes over more and more and almost all cultural creativity and diversity is lost. Many guardians of language are even concerned that Swedish will disappear.”
